Energy Incentive Programs

Below is a listing of programs we recommend Hyattsville residents investigate to improve their home's value and annual savings. In addition to this resource, the Gateway Arts District's MyGatewayArts.org has also assembled a listing of resources to Maryland residents.

Energy Efficiency

Must be an existing home & your principal residence. New construction and rentals do not qualify.  The Energy Star program offers tax credits on energy-efficient doors, windows, roofs (metal or asphalt), insulation and sealing, certain water heaters, and certain AC, furnaces and boilers.

The program covers 30 percent of eligible material costs and 30 percent of eligible installation costs for: biomass stoves; HVAC equipment, including oil-fired boilers; certain water heaters; geothermal heat pumps; solar PV, wind turbines; and fuel cells.  It does not cover installation costs for: insulation, roofs, windows, doors or skylights.  The maximum total credit per residence is $1500.  This program currently expires on December 31, 2010, and these items must be installed by then.

Rebates on HVAC tune ups and replacements of older inefficient HVAC systems.

Receive rebates on high efficiency refrigerators ($50), room A/C units ($25) and electric water heaters ($20).

If you rent or own a house and you meet certain eligibility requirements, you could qualify for this program which provides free energy efficiency improvements for your home.  The improvements range from insulation to water saving shower heads.

Pepco offers rebates on CFLs --  $1.50 per bulb or $3 for a multi-pack.  The maximum is 25 bulbs per customer. The discount is applied at the register when purchased at participating stores.  Participating stores can be found by clicking on the link above.

Solar PV (Photo Voltaic)

The Federal Government, the State of Maryland and Prince George's County all offer generous incentives for PV installations.  Homeowners can use incentives from all three levels of government to fund their projects.  Additionally, solar or geothermal heating and cooling system, solar hot water, photovoltaic and wind energy systems are exempt from local and state property taxes.

The federal program covers 30 percent of eligible equipment and installation costs, with no maximum.  The program is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2016.  Excess credit may be carried forward to the succeeding tax year.

This program has no expiration date, and grants are available until they run out.  The state still has money available for this fiscal year.  The maximum grant is $10,000, based on $.50 per watt of DC capacity.

The county covers 50 percent of eligible equipment and installation costs, up to $5000 per residence.  The program has no stated expiration date, but is capped at $250,000 in total county-wide credits per fiscal year.  This tax credit applies solely to the Prince George’s County portion of a property tax bill, and the amount of the credit may not exceed the taxes imposed on the property during a fiscal year.  Excess credits accrued during a year may be carried forward for up to two additional years.  This credit applies solely to new systems, not to expansions of existing systems. This tax credit is administered by the Office of Finance.
