The Hyattsville CDC recently partnered with Post Properties to develop a sculpture to be featured in the pedestrian plaza of Post Park Apartments, off of East-West Highway in the Prince George's Plaza Transit District. Hyattsville CDC issued a Call for Artists in December, gaining the attention of sculptors across the country, and a five-member selection panel, including Hyattsville's own Robert Croslin, an artist & goldsmith, reviewed the qualifying submissions.
All artwork and designs are copyright-protected to the artist. Local artist Alan Binstock's concept, "Pilgrim's Quandary", was chosen among other extremely strong concept proposals. The engineering, design refinements, and sculpture fabrication are now underway. At nearly 2000 lbs, and up to 17-feet high, this iconic sculpture will be installed before the end of April of this year.
Selection panelist Martin Howle, a Post Properties executive and architect expressed his satisfaction with the selection process and was pleased that the jury selected a local artist.
"Pilgrim's Quandary" manifests its themes as a strong and totemic emblem, and will be fabricated from stainless steel, silicon bronze and glass. It will feature a glass orb at the core of a 13-foot diameter shield-form, supported by curved cross-braced stainless steel rods. The sculpture is to reside prominently on the pedestrian plaza just south of Post Park apartments.
Mr. Binstock, sculptor, yogi, and NASA architect has been reviewed and featured in the Washington Post, Sculpture Magazine, and at The American Center for Physics for his contemplative works in stone, glass, and steel. "Pilgrim's Quandary" is the latest in his reflective body of work.
Post Park is a transit-oriented development and its arrival in Hyattsville reflects the City's revitalization goals of building upon the overlooked strengths and character at the heart of this Prince George's County inner-ring community. Along with their Public Art partnership, Post Properties has demonstrated a commitment to the local environment, undertaking a much-needed storm water mitigation project as part of Post Park's 6.8-acre development.
Other competition finalists include Barron Naegel, Carl Wright, Don Lawler, Tim Tate, Matt Kargol, Michael Szabo, and Mark Castator. You can get a peek at some of the proposals here: All artwork and designs are copyright-protected to the artists. |
